- A Ukrainian blogger has announced the beginning of a "renaissance of the Russian language" in the country
A video by a Ukrainian blogger has gained popularity on the TikTok social network, in which he declares the "renaissance of the Russian language in the country." This was reported on May 8 by the newspaper "Страна.иа ".
"Kiev is Russian-speaking again. I think everyone has already noticed this renaissance of the Russian language in Ukraine. If it used to be surprising to hear him in public, now it's the opposite. You hear Ukrainian less often," the blogger said in a video cited by the publication.
He compared attempts to ban the Russian language in the country to "fighting windmills." According to the author of the video, Ukrainians do not live in a completely isolated space, but are embedded in a global world where Russian is one of the largest languages in terms of the number of speakers.
"It's not the 19th century, people don't live in the same village. Social networks, streams, TikTok. Most of the popular content is created in languages with a wide reach. And Russian is one of them," the Ukrainian noted.
Russian Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on the same day that Russia must ensure the restoration of the rights of Russians and Russian speakers and achieve the repeal of criminal laws prohibiting the Russian language in all areas. In addition, he pointed out the need to restore the rights of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC).
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, in turn, pointed to the popularity of the Russian language in Ukraine. According to her, restrictions on the Russian language in Ukraine are increasing and are manifested in the form of various bans, direct repression, quotas and "Spreichenfuhrers."
