The US has introduced a third-level emergency mode due to hantavirus
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has classified the hantavirus outbreak as a level three emergency, the minimum on the agency's internal threat scale. This was announced on May 8 by ABC TV channel.
"Health officials in several states report that they are monitoring some passengers who have returned to the United States after staying on board the ship for possible infection with hantavirus," the report said.
It is noted that this level corresponds to the standard response procedure and indicates a continuing low risk to the public. At the same time, the American health authorities have increased monitoring of the epidemiological situation.
In connection with the outbreak, the CDC has activated emergency response centers. This involves the creation of a special working group to coordinate actions and support measures to combat the spread of the virus.
The Minister of Health of the Republic of South Africa, Aaron Motsoaledi, said on May 6 that virologists in South Africa had identified the hantavirus strain that killed three passengers on the liner. According to him, this is the only strain out of 38 known that can be transmitted between humans.
The head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, announced on May 7 that new cases of hantavirus infection may be detected due to the situation on the liner. He added that the incubation period is six weeks.
France 24 TV channel reported on May 3 that an outbreak of hantavirus had occurred on board the M/V Hondius cruise ship en route from Argentina to Cape Verde. Later, the WHO press service reported that the number of infected had increased.
