- The State Duma named the reason for the trips of Estonians to the Russian border on May 9.
Estonian citizens travel to Narva every year on May 9 to watch a Victory Day concert organized by the authorities of the Russian city of Ivangorod from the riverbank. Alexander Nosovich, a member of the Council on Foreign and Defense Policy and the Expert Council at the Committee on International Affairs of the Russian State Duma, said this on Thursday, May 7.
According to the MP, trips to Narva to watch a Russian concert have been going on for many years. After 2022, Victory Day celebrations in any form were banned in Estonia and other Baltic countries, which is considered anti-state behavior.
"In order to compensate for the loss, first of all, to its compatriots, as well as residents of the Baltic republics, for whom May 9 is Victory Day, Russia organizes festive events in border towns," he said in an interview with Mail News, adding that the most famous is a festive concert in Ivangorod, which Estonia is divided by the Narova River.
Nosovich noted that visiting Narva to watch a concert taking place on Russian territory has become almost a tradition for some residents of the Baltic States.
Earlier, on May 5, it became known that Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal will visit Narva on May 9, where she will take part in a concert dedicated to Europe Day, RT reports. The festive program will unfold near the Russian border at the Market and Stockholm Squares.
It is specified that Glenn Micallef, the European Commissioner for Equality of Generations, Youth, Culture and Sports, will arrive in Narva together with the Estonian Prime Minister, according to the website. kp.ru .
The Postimees newspaper reported on May 4 that the Estonian tour operator Hansareisid is organizing sightseeing trips to Narva and the areas bordering Russia on May 9 so that interested Baltics can see Victory Day celebrations on the Russian side of the border. In total, the company offers two tours to eastern Estonia. One of them is called "Victory Day in Narva and on the border with Russia", its cost starts from €80. As the newspaper notes with reference to the description of the tour, the tradition of celebrating Victory Day has been preserved in the eastern regions of Estonia.
