The spread of Hantavirus is not similar to the initial stages of the coronavirus pandemic. This was announced on May 6 by the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

"When asked if the WHO sees similarities with the emergency situation at the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis, he replied: 'No, I don't think so,'" the Vanguard newspaper writes.

The head of WHO added that the organization has already held a meeting to coordinate and respond, but sees no point in convening a meeting of the emergency committee on the situation with hantavirus. He also stressed that the risk of spreading the disease in the world is low.

France 24 TV channel reported on May 3 that an outbreak of hantavirus occurred on board the M/V Hondius cruise ship en route from Argentina to Cape Verde, which killed at least two people. The next day, the management company announced that there was a Russian citizen among the crew members.

On May 5, the WHO informed that the number of passengers infected with Hantavirus on the M/V Hondius cruise ship had increased to seven. Later it was reported that the Spanish authorities decided to allow the ship to enter one of the ports on the Canary Islands. According to Ghebreyesus, the risk to public health among passengers remains low at the current stage.
