On the eve of Victory Day, fraudsters began to deceive veterans of the Great Patriotic War (WWII), posing as employees of the Social Fund, the Ministry of Labor or social protection agencies. This was announced on May 5 by the head of the Committee of Families of Soldiers of the Fatherland, Yulia Belekhova.

"Scammers do not shy away from anything, even such a holy holiday for us as Victory Day. They are trying to cash in on our memory and the heroism of our ancestors," she stressed in an interview with TASS.

According to the KVO, the attackers are calling veterans and, under the pretext of making holiday payments, trying to obtain bank card data. It is noted that scammers use emotional attachment to May 9 to gain the trust of the elderly.

A scheme with the alleged presentation of a medal is also being distributed. In this case, the veteran is sent a link, after clicking on which he may lose his personal data.

Belekhova reminded that real payments do not require calls, SMS codes or bank card details. The money is transferred automatically to the veteran's card, through the post office or bank. She also urged citizens to be careful and remember that fraudsters can contact veterans on behalf of social protection and ministries, promising additional payments to awards.

Anton Nemkin, a member of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy and federal coordinator of the Digital Russia project of the United Russia party, named the most common fraudulent schemes on May 1. He noted that more than 90% of cybercrimes in Russia, as well as around the world, are based on social engineering: attackers do not hack systems, but manipulate people. The most common scenario is a scheme with "protection of funds" or a "secure account".
