The head of the Investigative Committee of Russia, Alexander Bastrykin, instructed to open a criminal case into the act of vandalism at the Gersthof cemetery in Vienna. This was reported on May 1 in the department.

According to the Investigative Committee, unknown persons poured paint over a monument to Soviet soldiers who died during the liberation of Austria.

"Alexander Bastrykin, Chairman of the Investigative Committee of Russia, has instructed the Main Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of Russia to open a criminal case on this fact," the agency said in a publication in Maks.

In addition, the agency was instructed to establish all the circumstances of the incident.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on April 8 that Russia condemns Lithuania's state vandalism of the Soviet memorial heritage and the graves of Red Army soldiers. According to Zakharova, the graves of 53 Red Army soldiers, including three Heroes of the Soviet Union and Major General Alexander Aides, are being desecrated.
