In Russia, omens have been given special importance since ancient times. They were used to judge the weather, when to sow and harvest, and what to expect in the future. Therefore, every day of the national calendar was full of rituals and superstitions. Izvestia tells about the popular signs of Saturday, May 2, and what church holidays are celebrated on this day.

Folk signs for May 2, 2026

In the folk calendar of the Eastern Slavs, May 2 is the day of Ivan the Old. For the peasant, this day was primarily the boundary between the outgoing spring and the approaching summer, the time when the earth finally wakes up and requires care.

In the old days, there was a beautiful ceremony for Ivan the Old Blacksmith, designed to appease spring and ensure a rich harvest of flax and hemp, the main "breadwinners" of peasant life. The women, wearing their best, and often freshly made outfits, went out into the field or meadow. They spread a bleached canvas (novelty) on the ground, bowed to all four sides and, turning to the east, said: "Here you go, Mother spring, a new novelty!" pies were placed on the spread cloth, after which they silently left, leaving the treats in the field.

It was believed that if spring is "dressed" in a new canvas and full, it will give the earth fertility, which means that flax will be born fibrous, and hemp — tall. In addition, on this day, the peasants took out old canvases and clothes, rinsed them in icy water and dried them in the spring sun — they believed that this way they could wash off the diseases accumulated over the winter.

On this day, special attention was paid to signs related to the weather. Our ancestors believed that nature itself dictates what the summer will be like and the time for haymaking. It was believed, for example, that the warm and clear weather on Ivan Vetkhopeschernik portends a cold snap at the end of May. And if there was a sharp warming, it promised a return of cold weather and even snow at the end of the month.

Other signs of the day:

  • golden dawn at sunrise — to good, clear weather without precipitation;
  • The rain in June will be warm and sunny, and the harvest will be plentiful.;
  • ducks build nests near the water — in case of drought; they nest far from the shore — in case of rainy summer.

What not to do on May 2nd

On the day of Ivan the Elder, there were a number of strict prohibitions, the violation of which, according to beliefs, could cause trouble for the whole year. It was believed that on May 2, in no case should one engage in heavy physical work: the ancestors believed that extra work would turn into endless and useless chores, from which there would be no rest. There was also a strict ban on bathing and even just washing: it was believed that on May 2 the water was "heavy" and could take away a person's health with mud, so it was better to postpone the water procedures for another day.

What else can not be done on May 2:

  • to refuse help and charity — you can lose your luck and the patronage of higher powers.;
  • walking in dirty or unwashed clothes — spring will not bring prosperity and well-being to the house.;
  • girls lick a spoon after eating — the husband will be pockmarked or lame according to an old superstition;
  • quarreling with family and friends — the conflict will drag on for a long time and may turn into hostility.;
  • wearing old or leaky clothes leads to poverty and failures in all endeavors.;
  • to refuse to give or help someone begging leads to poverty;
  • If pregnant women lend their personal belongings to someone, they can "give away" the child's happiness.

What is the church holiday on May 2nd?

In the Orthodox calendar, May 2 commemorates two great saints, separated by centuries, but equally revered by the entire Russian people. These are St. John the Old Hermit, an ascetic of the eighth century from Palestine, and Blessed Matrona of Moscow, a saint of the twentieth century, who is perhaps one of the most famous and beloved saints in modern Russia.

St. John the Old Hermit

St. John, lived in the 8th century in Palestine. He received the nickname "The Old Hermit" in honor of the Old (Sukkiysky) lavra, in which he labored. From a young age, leaving his native home, he went to worship the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, and then retired to the desert. His whole life is an example of severe asceticism and unceasing prayer.

John settled in the lavra where the Monk Khariton had once labored. Spending his time in vigils, fasting, and prayerful remembrance of death, he achieved complete dispassion and mortification of the flesh. Later, for his high life, he was awarded the rank of priest.

The Life of the Blessed Matrona of Moscow

Blessed Matrona (Matryona Nikonova) was born in 1881 in the Tula province into a poor peasant family. According to the life, the girl was born blind.

Already at the age of 7-8, she discovered the gift of clairvoyance and healing of the sick. People from all over the neighborhood reached out to the little Matron: she predicted the fate of one, helped the other with prayer or advice. At the age of 17-18, she suddenly lost her legs and remained "sedentary" until her death. The saint herself accepted this cross without a murmur, saying that it was God's will.

In 1925, Matrona moved to Moscow, where she wandered around corners and basements, escaping arrest. Her whole room was filled with icons; people secretly came to her for help and comfort, and she refused no one. Blessed Matrona died peacefully on May 2, 1952. Long before her death, she said: "Everyone, everyone, come to me and tell me, as if alive, about your sorrows, I will see you, and hear you, and help you." In 1998, the saint's relics were found and transferred to the Moscow Pokrovsky Monastery, and in 2004 she was glorified as a church-wide saint.

Prayers on May 2nd

On May 2, believers address prayers to St. John the Old Hermit and Matrona of Moscow. He is asked for protection from thieves, for the return of stolen items and for the resolution of disputes. They pray to St. Blessed Matrona of Moscow for the most intimate things: for the gift of children, for healing from diseases, for finding work and housing, for a successful marriage, for the return of missing persons and for the preservation of the family.

Prayer to Matrona of Moscow

"O blessed mother Matrona, come with your soul to heaven before the Throne of God, and with your body to rest on earth, and with the grace given from above, you exude various miracles. Look now with your merciful eye upon us sinners, who depend on us in tribulation, sickness, and sinful temptations, comfort us, who are desperate, heal our fierce ailments, which God has permitted us through our sins, deliver us from many troubles and situations, and beseech our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us all our sins, iniquities, and Since the fall of Man, whom we have sinned from our youth even to the present day and hour, that through your prayers, having received grace and great mercy, we may glorify in the Trinity the One God, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen to that."

Prayer to St. John the Old Hermit

"O holy head, Venerable Father, Most Blessed Abba John, do not forget your poor to the end, but always remember us in holy and auspicious prayers to God: remember your flock, which you have saved yourself, and do not forget to visit your children. Pray for us, holy Father, for your spiritual children, for you have Boldness to the Heavenly King: do not be silent for us to the Lord, and do not despise us who honor you with faith and love: remember us unworthy at the Throne of the Almighty, and do not stop praying for us to Christ God, for you have been given the grace to pray for us. We don't think you're dead.: For though you have passed away from us in body, but you are still alive after death, do not depart from us in spirit, preserving us from the arrows of the enemy and all the charms of demons and the machinations of the devil, our good shepherd. For even though your relics of cancer are always visible before our eyes, your holy soul, with angelic hosts, fleshless faces, and heavenly powers, stands at the throne of the Almighty, rejoicing worthily, leading you in truth and being alive after death, we fall down and pray to you: pray for us to Almighty God, for For the benefit of our souls, and grant us time for repentance, so that we may safely pass from earth to heaven, and may we be delivered from bitter ordeals, demons of the air, and eternal torment, and may we be heiresses of the heavenly Kingdom with all the righteous who have pleased our Lord Jesus Christ from the beginning.: To Him belongs all glory, honor, and worship, together with His Beginningless Father, and with His All-holy, Good, and Life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen to that."
