A Frenchman stole 53 million gold coins from a museum and sold them in Russia
Employees of the Federal Customs Service, the FSB and the Interior Ministry have detained a French citizen who stole a collection of gold coins worth more than 53 million rubles from the Saint-Remy Museum and sold them in Moscow. This was announced on April 28 by the Federal Customs Service of Russia.
29-year-old Anthony Castelein worked at the historical museum and, using his official position, took out some of the exhibits. We are talking about gold coins from the time of the Roman Empire and the reign of Napoleon III.
As law enforcement officers have established, in 2023-2024, the man came to Moscow several times. In order to pass through customs control without any problems, he hid the stolen coins in the change compartment in his wallet and mixed them with euro cents.
A criminal case has been opened on this fact. An investigation is underway, and all the circumstances of the theft and sale of cultural property are being established. Information about the detention has been sent to the French side.
