The share of Russian citizens who believe that Vladimir Lenin acted in the interests of the whole society has decreased to 16% in nine years, the majority of respondents believe that he acted in the interests of the majority of citizens. This follows from a study conducted by the VTsIOM analytical center on April 22.

Compared to 2016, the share of respondents who are confident that Lenin defended the interests of the whole society has decreased from 30% to 16%. At the same time, the number of those who believe that the leader of the revolution acted in the interests of the broad majority has increased — from 13% to 18%, as well as just the majority — from 22% to 27%.

5% of respondents spoke about the interests of a narrow minority, compared to 4% nine years ago. The share of those who spoke about the benefits for a small group of people increased from 11% to 13%.

At the same time, 64% of respondents said they felt sympathy for Lenin. Among those who were born before 1947, this proportion reaches 81%.

The survey was conducted in April by telephone among 1.6 thousand Russians over the age of 18. Sociologists compared the results obtained with data from a similar 2016 study, which was conducted in the format of apartment-by-apartment personal interviews.

The Federal Security Service (FSO) announced on April 22 that Lenin's Mausoleum on Red Square in Moscow will be closed to the public from Thursday, April 23, until May 17. This will also affect the necropolis on Red Square.
