A 7.4 magnitude earthquake has struck Aomori Prefecture in northern Japan, and authorities have declared a tsunami threat. This was announced by the meteorological department on April 20.

"Currently, tsunami warnings are in effect for the coastal regions of Japan," the agency's website says.
