WHO has monitored the situation with smallpox of monkeys in the Moscow region

The World Health Organization (WHO) is monitoring the situation in the Moscow region, where cases of monkeypox infection have been recorded. Two infected people are receiving medical care at the Domodedovo Hospital. This was announced on April 17 by the official representative of the organization Tarik Zhazarevich.

"WHO is monitoring the situation through monitoring and communication with the health authorities of the Russian Federation," the WHO representative emphasized in an interview with RIA Novosti.

According to Zhazarevich, to date, no drugs have been registered that exclusively target the causative agent of smallpox in monkeys. The treatment of infected people is based on other principles, including the control of symptoms and possible medical complications.

The WHO representative added that as part of the therapy, they can test for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), as well as prescribe antiretroviral therapy for people already living with this disease.

Gennady Onishchenko, an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), warned on April 13 about the likely registration of new cases of smallpox in Russia and pointed out the need to increase the production of a domestic vaccine.

Monkey pox is a rare disease. In case of infection, there are vivid symptoms: fever, intoxication, enlarged lymph nodes, rash turning into ulcers. It is transmitted from animals and between humans.
