Canada may become a part of the European Union (EU) in the future. The President of Finland, Alexander Stubb, said this on April 15.

"I can imagine a much larger EU, whether Canada will be a part of it or not is up to Canada itself," Stubb said in an interview with the Canadian television channel CBC.

The Finnish leader also stressed Canada's proximity to the European Union in key parameters. According to him, the country's structure and value system is "so close to the European Union" that building a close strategic partnership should be the minimum step.

It clarifies that this is not about specific accession negotiations, but about a hypothetical scenario of EU enlargement and deepening cooperation between the parties.

The Politico newspaper reported earlier in the day that representatives of the EU countries opposed possible debates about the entry of new members into the community. This also applies to such candidates for membership as Ukraine and Moldova.
