Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch called the incident a humiliating U-turn by the government. She stated that the deal should not have been considered initially, and expressed her joy that the process had been suspended.

"Paying 35 billion pounds to give back territory that we already own, at a time when so many people in this country are facing the costs of living, just shows that they weren't thinking clearly at all," Badenoch said.
