- The Iranian Foreign Ministry announced the possibility of passage through the Strait of Hormuz with permission
The Strait of Hormuz is open to ships, including those from the United States, but this is possible only with the consent of the Iranian authorities. This was announced on April 9 by Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh.
"The Strait of Hormuz is open. However, of course, every tanker and every ship must coordinate the necessary measures with the Iranian authorities in order to safely pass through the strait," he told British television channel ITV.
Khatibzade clarified that when passing through the sea corridor for Tehran, "there is no difference" in the issue of ships belonging to any specific countries. The most important factor here is the absence of "any hostile behavior," however, as the deputy minister pointed out, "there are no signs of this."
"Therefore, everything can proceed as usual. Of course, as I said, taking into account the existing restrictions," Khatibzade assured.
He also said that Tehran expects to reach an agreement on lasting peace "throughout the Middle East" during negotiations with the United States in Pakistan. The diplomat urged not to doubt Iran's ability to comply with the peace agreements.
Earlier in the day, US President Donald Trump said that Washington and Tehran had long agreed on the nuclear program and the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, but the US military would remain in the region until a deal was signed on paper. He added that if an agreement is not reached, military operations in Iran will begin even more extensive and more powerful than before.
The day before, US Vice President Jay Dee Vance said that Washington would not fulfill its part of the ceasefire if Iran did not open the Strait of Hormuz. At the same time, the Reuters news agency reported that the Iranian authorities could partially open the Strait of Hormuz next Thursday or Friday, before starting negotiations with representatives of the United States in Islamabad.
