A ban on cryptocurrency mining should be introduced in the Moscow region. This was announced on April 1 by Sergey Voropanov, Minister of Energy of the Moscow Region.

"We are ready to take such an extreme measure, which is not very popular, but has an effect in other regions. This means banning mining on the territory of Moscow and the Moscow region," TASS quoted him as saying.

According to him, about 1 GW of capacities in Moscow and the Moscow region are involved in the extraction of digital currencies, which does not provide economic benefits for the region. Voropanov also proposed to develop a general scheme for the placement of data centers with a capacity of over 10 MW and prohibit direct connection to power facilities.

The day before, the Russian government sent to the State Duma a bill criminalizing illegal mining of cryptocurrencies and illegal management of mining infrastructure. It was noted that a new article is planned to be introduced into the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, according to which illegal mining will be punishable by a fine of up to 1.5 million rubles or the earnings of the perpetrator for up to two years.
