- Scientists have identified atypical symptoms of depression in the peoples of South Asia
A group of researchers led by Lydia Poole from the University of Surrey in the UK found that depression in representatives of South Asian ethnic groups manifests itself mainly through somatic symptoms. This was reported by The British Journal of Psychiatry (BJP).
The experts conducted a systematic review of 40 papers covering data on large South Asian diasporas in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
The analysis showed that instead of the classic psychological manifestations in this population group, physical ailments come to the fore. Among the most common signs, scientists have identified pain in the body, head and neck, as well as specific sensations in the heart area: compression, pressure and shortness of breath.
Complementing the clinical picture is the fact that there are complaints from patients about recurring negative thoughts and serious sleep disorders.
Yogi practitioner, spiritual teacher Ji Paramguru, in an interview with Izvestia on March 28, ruled out treating anxiety and depression through meditation and yoga. According to him, initially these practices were not created as therapeutic. The specialist emphasized that yoga and meditation are tools for expanding perception. Paramguru noted that with chronic anxiety, such practices can increase internal tension.
