Scientists talked about the environment that is useful for quality sleep.
As is often the case, a person instinctively turns to nature or background sounds to make it easier for himself to sleep. However, constant environmental noise, including the background sounds of transport, planes, and trains, can disrupt relaxation. On March 25, Popular Science magazine found out which sound is best suited for quality sleep.
"Your brain doesn't shut down like a computer," says Saito, "and it continues to process stimuli throughout the night. Such noises can increase the level of stress hormones such as cortisol and put the body into a "fight or flight" mode, which leads to an increase in heart rate and blood pressure," said John Saito, a representative of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
According to him, to understand which sounds affect us, it is necessary to understand the architecture of sleep — the structure of the transition between different stages of sleep. The specialist clarified that in people with a very active brain, any sound can disrupt their sleep. However, there are those who can sleep even during a loud alarm.
Saito emphasizes that the perception of different sounds depends on individual preferences. White noise is sounds with a uniform frequency distribution, such as the sound of a fan or a slight hum. In contrast, brown noise has lower frequencies and resembles a thunderstorm or heavy rain. Pink noise, in turn, is balanced and has more low frequencies than white noise, but with lower high frequencies.
Pink and other noises that contain all audible frequencies are considered good for sleep. However, recent studies have shown that they can reduce the number of deep sleep phases. Saito claims that the best sound depends on personal preferences and sleep conditions.
In addition, the expert called listening to metal music and watching TV before going to bed bad ideas. According to him, when falling asleep to the noise of the TV, not only sound pollution occurs, but also light pollution.
Saito explains that throughout the history of human survival, humans have been attuned to the perception of noises that can signal danger. He stressed that it is best to get rid of noise and observe darkness during sleep. Keeping quiet with earplugs or soundproof curtains is claimed to be able to significantly improve sleep quality.
On March 24, Popular Science reported on the ability of dreams to trick the brain. According to the publication, vivid dreams create the illusion of deep and restorative sleep in humans. At the same time, brain activity, as specified, remains high.
