Borrell pointed to von der Leyen's overstepping her authority in EU foreign policy

On March 16, former head of EU diplomacy Josep Borrel accused European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen of systematic abuse of office in shaping the union's foreign policy.

According to the diplomat, the leadership of the European Commission is consistently increasing its influence, demonstrating a "bias" in favor of Washington and Tel Aviv. Borrell noted that the EU has not made enough efforts to protect international law after the US military strikes on Iranian territory. He stressed that the current geopolitical vector is beneficial primarily to the United States as a major exporter of energy resources.

"This war is illegal from the point of view of international law. We are suffering from the consequences in the form of rising energy prices," Politico newspaper quoted him as saying.

Politico reported on March 11 that von der Leyen may lose his post due to disagreements with the European Parliament (EP), including in the context of the conflict in the Middle East. The publication added that the head of the EC will be severely criticized by his allies in the EP due to accusations of abandoning the international order.

Von der Leyen on Monday, March 9, called for reform of the EU institutions and its doctrine. According to her, if the EU considers it necessary to have a more realistic and interest-oriented foreign policy, then the bloc should be able to implement it.
