- NASA has ruled out the possibility of asteroid 2024 YR4 colliding with the Moon in 2032.
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has denied rumors about a possible collision of the asteroid 2024 YR4 with the Moon in 2032. This was reported on March 5 by Universe Today magazine.
Previously, there was some uncertainty in the calculations of the orbital path of this space object, which created an insignificant chance of impact. However, new data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has confirmed that the asteroid will pass the moon.
Based on the data obtained, experts from the Center for Near-Earth Object Research at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) announced that the 2024 YR4 will fly past the Moon at a distance of 13.2 thousand miles on December 22, 2032. Earlier analyses of the asteroid's orbital path were not accurate enough, leading to an assumption of a 4.3% chance of a collision with the Moon.
Asteroid 2024 YR4 was discovered in 2024 by the ATLAS system in Chile. Initial observations in 2025 showed uncertainty in the calculations, which gave rise to rumors of a possible impact on Earth. However, later, the possibility of an impact on Earth was quickly ruled out, and the question of a possible collision with the Moon remained open.
On March 3, the Science X news portal reported on the ability of living organisms to move between planets. It was clarified that they do this on the debris of asteroids. The study showed that certain bacteria can withstand the extreme pressure that occurs when ejected from Mars after an asteroid impact.
