The Constitutional Court of Spain rejected the complaint of the father of a 25-year-old girl, who for a year and a half tried through the courts to prevent the euthanasia of his daughter. This was reported by the Reuters news agency.

According to the newspaper, the girl has been attempting suicide for several years. In October 2022, she suffered severe injuries, which left her paralyzed from the waist down. According to medical reports, the patient is experiencing chronic pain, and there are no prospects for improvement.

In July 2024, the Catalan committee approved her request for euthanasia. The procedure was scheduled for August of the same year, but the girl's father blocked it. With the support of the organization Abogados Cristianos ("Christian Lawyers"), he challenged it in all judicial instances, claiming that due to her mental state, her daughter could not make an informed decision.

After the court's decision, the man's representatives announced their intention to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights for further appeal. In 2021, Spain became the fourth country in the European Union (EU) to legalize euthanasia for patients.

Last May, the lower house of the French parliament approved a bill that allows euthanasia for people with incurable diseases. It was noted that a group of medical specialists will be required to confirm that a person has a serious terminal incurable disease and unbearable pain. At the same time, patients with severe mental illnesses and neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease will not receive permission for euthanasia.
