Prolonged computer work or smartphone use can cause eye discomfort. Scientists talked about how to reduce the strain on the eyes when working with digital devices. This was reported by Popular Science magazine on February 22.

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, people blink less often when looking at a screen. The norm is about 15 times per minute, but when using gadgets, the frequency can be halved. This conclusion is supported by a 2022 research review led by Kirandep Kaur Ophthalmology Hospital and Aravind Institute of Postgraduate Education in India.

The authors analyzed almost 30 studies on so-called digital visual tension. In addition to reducing the frequency of blinking, text and background contrast, glare on the screen, incorrect viewing distance and angle, poor lighting and uncomfortable posture are among the risk factors.

As a result, prolonged screen time can cause dry eyes, itching, foreign body sensation, lacrimation, blurred vision, and headache. At the same time, the researchers emphasize that there is not enough data yet on whether this leads to irreversible damage, but the discomfort itself is real.

Research confirms the effectiveness of the so-called "20-20-20" rule. It is also recommended by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The rule is to look at an object about 20 feet (about 6 m) away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes. This, according to experts, helps to relax the focus and partially restore the blinking frequency.

The authors of the review also advise limiting screen time to four hours a day, using additional indoor lighting, and giving preference to glasses instead of contact lenses when working for a long time. For those who find it difficult to remember breaks, it is recommended to use special reminder programs.

On February 19, Science Daily magazine reported on the effect of lighting on the growth of myopia. According to the researchers, the development of myopia is more influenced not by the use of digital devices, but by a decrease in the amount of light that reaches the retina of the eye when focusing on closely located objects for a long time.
