On February 18, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova commented on the statements of Western politicians, including NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, noting that Moscow does not intend to respond to insults in the same tone.

"This is some kind of competition: who's going to name someone worse. I've heard such expressions, and gestures, and facial expressions! Rutte is the "garden snail" of us (Russia. — Ed.) called it," she said.

She added that Russia could respond in a similar way, but prefers not to stoop to such a style of communication and not participate in such a "competition", leaving opponents at this level.
