- The State Duma approved in the first reading a draft law on the prevention of military service evasion
On February 18, the State Duma at its plenary session adopted in the first reading a draft law on strengthening measures to counter the distortion of historical truth and to curb evasion from the duty to protect the Fatherland.
The draft law proposes to expand the list of main areas of crime prevention stipulated in the federal law. It is planned to include clauses on "preventing and suppressing evasions from the duty to protect the Fatherland," as well as on "countering the distortion of historical truth."
According to Chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin, the adoption of such norms will allow the state to more effectively combat destructive propaganda aimed at distorting history.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on February 7 that Russia would fight attempts to falsify history and distort the truth about World War II and its outcome. The diplomat also criticized the European Parliament (EP) for adopting resolutions on the equal responsibility of the USSR and the Third Reich for unleashing the war.
On January 23, Zakharova and Israeli Ambassador Oded Yosef stressed the need to resist attempts to rewrite history. The sides exchanged views on the issues of preserving the historical memory of the Second World War. The Russian side informed the Israeli diplomat about the efforts being made to perpetuate the feat of Soviet soldiers.
