Hillary Clinton confused the conflict in Ukraine with the war in Iraq
On February 17, former US Secretary of State and former First Lady Hillary Clinton confused the conflict in Ukraine with the invasion of Iraq in 2003 during an interview.
Clinton gave an interview to the BBC television channel. She spoke about her vision of resolving the conflict in Ukraine, the policies of US President Donald Trump and the scandalous publication of financier Jeffrey Epstein's files.
"I think one of the biggest threats we're all facing right now is attempts to <...> to impose an unsafe, unfair end to the war in Iraq," the politician misspoke.
Clinton was eventually corrected by journalist Sandra Maischberger, who did the interview.
The war in Iraq began in 2003 as a result of the invasion by the US-led coalition. The purpose of the fighting was to overthrow the regime of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. The conflict is considered to be the reaction of American President George W. Bush to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Washington accused the Hussein government of allegedly creating mass biological weapons, but no evidence of this was found. The United States withdrew troops from Iraq only in 2011.
On January 15, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at the ceremony of presenting the credentials of foreign ambassadors that Russia opposes external interference in the internal affairs of Lebanon and Iraq. According to him, political relations with both countries have traditionally developed in a positive way.
