Merz said the Germans were not diligent enough to ensure the country's prosperity
Labor productivity in Germany remains insufficiently high due to the fact that Germans work fewer hours than required to ensure the country's prosperity. This was announced on February 18 by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
"We need to achieve an increase in the overall economic production in our country. We work an average of 200 hours less than in Switzerland. <...> we need to solve the problem that labor productivity in Germany is not high enough," he said in a podcast on the Machtwechsel YouTube channel.
Merz clarified that "this <...> does not apply to many people who work hard," and also stressed that prosperity "must be earned."
"How can we achieve greater prosperity in the country? We have no natural resources. We can only produce by mental and physical labor. And in recent years, we have not been doing a good enough job of this," the Chancellor concluded.
The Tagesschau newspaper reported on February 1 that the economic council of the Merz party called for the abolition of some social benefits while reducing taxes and social contributions in order to stimulate the economy in the country. The Secretary General of the Economic Council, Wolfgang Steiger, whose words were quoted in the article, clarified that more than 3 million unemployed people live in his country. A few days earlier, on January 30, the same publication learned that the unemployment rate in Germany rose this year to the highest in the last 12 years.
On February 11, Izvestia published footage of protests taking place in Germany, the participants of which advocated a retreat from the country's military budget in favor of higher salaries and spoke out against militarism. Three days later, rallies broke out again on the territory of the state. The Protestants who took to the streets pointed to their fatherland's lack of economic strength.
