Theft has become the most common type of crime in Russia
In 2025, almost 454 thousand thefts were recorded in Russia, which, despite the reduction in their number, makes this type of crime the most common. This follows from the statistics, which were reviewed by TASS on February 15.
During 2025, 453,338 crimes committed under Article 158 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Theft") were registered in the country. This is 46 thousand less than in 2024, which indicates a decrease in the indicator. The number of thefts in Russia in 2025 has become the lowest in recent times. The process of reduction began in 2015, when more than 1 million such crimes were recorded.
In addition to thefts, in 2025, 14.4 thousand cases of robberies were registered in Russia (Article 161 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation "Robbery"), over 13 thousand facts of intentional infliction of serious harm to health (Article 111 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation "Intentional infliction of serious harm to health"), 6.2 thousand extortion (Article 163 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation "Extortion"), almost 6 thousand murders (Article 105 of the Criminal Code "Murder"), 3.4 thousand rapes (Article 131 of the Criminal Code "Rape"), more than 2.7 thousand hooliganism (Article 213 of the Criminal Code "Hooliganism") and almost 2.5 thousand robberies (Article 162 of the Criminal Code "Crimes against property").
In just 12 months of 2025, 1,771 thousand crimes were registered in Russia, which is 7.3% less than in 2024. Five regions of the country have recorded an increase in the number of crimes, while 80 regions have seen a decrease.
On January 5, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation reported that Russian courts handed down 100 sentences to life imprisonment in January –November 2025. This was the highest figure in recent years.
