The Russian Ministry of Agriculture has supported an initiative to add a veterinary drug with the active ingredient gabapentin to the list of prescription-only drugs. Sergey Leonov, head of the State Duma Committee on Health Protection, received such a response from the ministry to his appeal.

Gabapentin is available on prescription, but its animal counterpart was sold without restrictions, which led to the massive purchase of the drug by teenagers in order to obtain a narcotic effect.

"The Ministry of Agriculture indicated in its letter that the Rosselkhoznadzor supports the initiative to add the active substance gabapentin to the list of prescription veterinary drugs. In this regard, the Ministry of Agriculture is already working on making appropriate changes to the list of prescription veterinary drugs, which means that veterinary drugs with the active ingredient gabapentin will soon be available exclusively by prescription," Leonov said in an interview with TASS.

He noted that this decision would help stop uncontrolled consumption and protect the health of citizens, including young people. He thanked the Ministry of Agriculture for its prompt response and stressed the importance of further work in this direction.

On January 13, Leonov appealed to the Minister of Agriculture Oksana Lut with a request to clarify the position of the Ministry of Agriculture regarding the free sale of the drug. The reason was media reports about mass poisoning of children with veterinary drugs, which teenagers purchase on marketplaces in order to obtain drug intoxication.
