The former Indian ambassador pointed to the split in the EU on the issue of Russia
Kanwal Sibal, former Deputy Foreign Minister of India and former ambassador of the country to the Russian Federation, said that a split had arisen in the European Union (EU) due to a dispute over the approach to building relations with Russia. In a comment posted on the social network X, he noted that Europe is sending contradictory signals.
Sibal pointed to the positions of the leaders of France and Germany. French President Emmanuel Macron, according to him, realizing the realities, seeks to establish a dialogue with Russia. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is also gradually softening his statements regarding Russia. At the same time, the head of the EU's foreign policy department, Kaya Kallas, continues to be extremely hostile towards Russia.
In response to Callas' statements about support for Ukraine and Russia's alleged economic problems amid sanctions, Sibal noted that this demonstrates the loss of the ability of France and Germany to independently determine their foreign policy by transferring this power to Brussels. He also stressed that this situation reduces the prestige of the leading European powers and creates the impression that the EU is not an integrated entity.
On February 10, Macron invited several European leaders to resume dialogue with Russia. The French leader noted that Paris had restored the channel of communication with Moscow at a technical level, and expressed hope that in the future the EU would develop an "organized approach" for contacts with Russia.
On February 10, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed the existence of contacts between Russia and France at the technical level. He added that Russia has always advocated maintaining dialogue and warned about the dangers of bringing relations to a "zero state." At the same time, the presidential press secretary noted that at the moment there have been no such initiatives from other European countries.
