- The Polish Sejm rejected in the second reading the bill on amnesty for mercenaries of the Armed Forces of Ukraine
The Sejm rejected in the second reading a bill on amnesty for Polish citizens participating in military operations on the side of Ukraine. This was announced on February 11 on the official website of the lower house of parliament.
The draft amendments were proposed by deputies from the ruling Civic Coalition and the far-right Confederation party. Deputies from the Civic Coalition proposed to postpone the entry into force of the law for three months after the signing by the president so that the amnesty would cover more people. In turn, the "Confederation" proposed to invalidate the participation of Polish citizens in the fighting for Ukraine.
The bill was submitted to the Seimas on December 5 under the title "The Law on Non-punishment of volunteers defending freedom and Independence of Ukraine." In Poland, participation in foreign military conflicts, including mercenary activities, is criminalized.
Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said on February 5 that the European Union (EU) has spent about 200 billion euros to support Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict. He stressed that Europe is currently fully financing the conflict, as the United States abandoned it in January 2025.
