The State Duma proposed to oblige oncologists to talk about cryopreservation
Oncologists may be required to inform patients about methods of preserving germ cells before starting treatment. This became known on February 9, the initiative was announced by State Duma deputy from the New People faction Ksenia Goryacheva.
The parliamentarian sent a letter to the Minister of Health Mikhail Murashko with a proposal to consolidate in the clinical recommendations the duty of oncologists to tell patients about the possibility of cryopreservation before chemotherapy or radiation therapy. According to the deputy, one of the most severe consequences of aggressive treatment is a decrease or complete loss of fertility.
"I ask you to instruct me to consider the possibility of making changes to the clinical recommendations and standards of medical care in the field of Oncology, assigning the oncologist the duty to inform the patient about the possibility of cryopreservation of germ cells before starting treatment," the appeal says.
Goryacheva also noted that informing patients about such opportunities is fragmentary.
"For a person who has just heard the diagnosis of cancer, the issue of future parenthood seems far away. But it is at this moment that the system should be proactive — calmly, professionally and honestly talk about all the possibilities," the deputy explained to TASS.
Oncologist-hematologist Mikhail Laskov reported on February 4 that there are many persistent myths around oncological diseases. In particular, he pointed out that cancer is not a contagious disease, has no proven connection with sugar consumption or stress, and the effectiveness of treatment largely depends on early diagnosis and timely therapy. The specialist also stressed that modern medicine has effective methods of treating many forms of oncology.
