- The Federation Council indicated a desire to Trump to build serious relations with Russia
US President Donald Trump is determined to have serious relations with Russia and does not suffer from "internal Russophobia." This was announced on February 7 by Alexey Pushkov, head of the Federation Council's information policy commission.
"He (Trump — Ed.) does not insult Russia, its people, or its leaders. Trump speaks respectfully about Russia. Trump talks about Russia as a state with which he intends to maintain serious relations," Pushkov told TASS.
Pushkov noted that Trump does not have a deliberately pro—Ukrainian or anti-Russian agenda, and his main principle is to ensure America's central role in world events.
According to the senator, although Russia remains a strategic rival for the United States, Trump is not looking for an excuse to escalate relations, which indicates his pragmatic approach.
The day before, Trump announced the positive progress of negotiations on the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict and allowed the possibility of further events. He noted that contacts with both sides are continuing.
U.S. Undersecretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Thomas Dinanno said on February 6 that Trump intends to seek a new arms control agreement.
On February 5, Trump expressed support for the creation of a new and improved strategic arms agreement to replace the START Treaty. He noted that the new agreement should be more modern and improved.
