Trump declared his readiness to defend the US base on Diego Garcia
US President Donald Trump said that the United States is ready to use military means to ensure the continued presence of its base on Diego Garcia Island in the event of threats or termination of the lease agreement. This was announced on February 5 by Trump on the Truth Social network.
"If in the future the lease agreement is terminated or anyone threatens or endangers US operations and forces at our base, I reserve the right to militarily secure and strengthen the American presence at Diego Garcia," he wrote.
At the same time, Trump stressed that he considers the deal concluded by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on the transfer of sovereignty over the Chagos archipelago to Mauritius to be the "best possible", but reserved for the United States the right to act in case of threats.
On January 29, Trump announced that the UK plans to transfer the island of Diego Garcia to Mauritius, despite the importance of the US base. On January 23, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer withdrew the bill on the transfer of the archipelago after criticism from the United States and conservatives who feared a violation of the 60-year-old treaty with the United States.
