The State Duma proposed to change the procedure for calculating pensions for employees of the marine and river fleets, as well as the fishing industry. This was announced on February 5 by Yaroslav Nilov, head of the State Duma Committee on Labor, Social Policy and Veterans' Affairs.

"The draft federal law On Amendments to Article 30 of the Federal Law On Labor Pensions in the Russian Federation (hereinafter referred to as the draft Law) is aimed at increasing the level of pension provision for persons who worked in the naval, river fleet and fishing industry fleet," the explanatory note to the document says.

According to Nilov, the current procedure does not take into account the specifics of the difficult working conditions of sailors and fishermen who worked in the northern regions, but did not live there permanently.

"Why did the sailors from Kaliningrad work in the northern regions and receive the corresponding "northern" salary supplement, but they receive a pension on a general basis? But working on a ship in the latitudes of the Arctic zone, for example, is really hard work," the deputy told RIA Novosti.

Certain categories of Russians can expect to retire early. Lyudmila Ivanova-Shvets, an expert at Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, reported on February 1 that citizens with northern experience, workers in harmful and dangerous industries, as well as mothers with many children have such a right. They have special requirements for length of service and retirement age, while each year of work in northern conditions may lower the retirement age.
