The largest US companies, including Amazon, UPS, Dow, Nike, and Home Depot, intend to lay off at least 52,000 employees due to the slowdown in labor market growth and the active introduction of artificial intelligence (AI). This was reported on January 30 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper, citing David Mericle, chief U.S. economist at Goldman Sachs.

"Companies are increasingly discussing layoffs and seeking to use AI to reduce labor costs," Mericle noted.

According to the newspaper, mass layoffs have become new evidence of job cuts after years of active hiring. Several companies attributed the need for reductions to economic uncertainty and growing pressure to invest in AI technologies.

On January 27, Reuters reported that the American company Nike is laying off 775 employees, primarily in distribution centers in the United States, in an attempt to reduce costs and regain market leadership. Nike has confirmed a new wave of layoffs that will affect distribution facilities in the United States, in particular warehouse employees in Tennessee and Mississippi.
