- Trump has nominated a candidate for the post of Assistant Attorney General for combating fraud
On January 28, US President Donald Trump nominated Colin McDonald to the post of first Assistant Attorney General of the United States for combating fraud, announcing the creation of a new department of the Ministry of Justice.
"I am pleased to nominate Colin McDonald for the position of the first—ever assistant Attorney General for combating fraud nationwide, a new department of the Department of Justice that I created to identify and stop fraud that robs the American people," Trump wrote on his Truth Social network.
He noted that his administration had identified fraudulent schemes in states such as Minnesota and California, where criminals stole hundreds of billions of dollars from taxpayers' funds.
Trump also stressed that McDonald, who worked for the federal Prosecutor's office, had achieved justice in some of the most complex and important cases handled in the United States.
CBS reported on January 16 that the U.S. Department of Justice has launched an investigation into the leaders of the state of Minnesota, including Governor Tim Waltz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, on charges of conspiring to obstruct the activities of the Federal Immigration Service (ICE). According to the publication, Waltz declined to comment, and Frey said that this was an attempt to intimidate him for protecting Minneapolis, local law enforcement agencies and residents from "chaos and danger."
