The European Commission is preparing a complete ban on the purchase of Russian-made nuclear fuel by the countries of the European Union. This was announced on January 27 by the representative of the EC Ana Kaiza Itkonen.

"We absolutely intend to complete the RePowerEU policy, which aims to phase out all Russian energy from the EU market," she said.

The EC representative did not specify a specific time frame, but expressed the hope that this would happen in the near future.

The day before, the Council of the European Union approved a complete ban on the supply of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) from January 1, 2027, and pipeline gas from September 30, 2027. It was specified that the ban would take effect six weeks after the decree came into force. The EU noted that a transition period will be provided for existing contracts.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on January 27 that the EU's decision to ban the purchase of Russian gas was extremely unreasonable from the point of view of the economic interests of the EU countries.
