Tapioca imports to Russia reached a historic high in 2025
Tapioca imports to Russia in 2025 increased by 13% and reached a historic high of $726 thousand. Information about this follows from open data from different countries.
Tapioca, a starchy product from the roots of the tropical cassava plant, is used as a thickener in the food industry and to make jelly balls in the popular bubble tea drink. The main suppliers to the global market are Thailand, Nigeria, Indonesia, Brazil, Vietnam, Ghana, India and China.
According to statistics reviewed by RIA Novosti, Russia imported tapioca for a record $726 thousand in 2025. China and Thailand became the main suppliers. At the same time, imports from China decreased by 20% to $380,000, while imports from Thailand, on the contrary, doubled to a record $346,000. As a result, Russia dropped from 15th to 17th place among the main buyers of Chinese tapioca. Indonesia, South Korea and the USA became the leaders.
In the ranking of importers of Thai tapioca, Russia has risen by six positions, taking 20th place. The total volume of tapioca imports to Russia has increased by 6.8 times in five years.
Dmitry Monakhov, a surgeon at the Scandinavian Health Center, said on November 5 last year that the popular bubble tea drink, which includes tea, milk, jelly balls with juice or tapioca, despite its harmless appearance, can cause serious digestive problems if consumed frequently.
Monakhov explained that the first signs of obstruction may appear within a few hours after consuming the dough. He attributed bloating, nausea, and a feeling of heaviness to them. Later, abdominal pain, vomiting, and lack of stool may be added to the symptoms. In severe cases, intestinal obstruction leads to inflammation of the abdominal cavity and general intoxication of the body.
