- Zakharova expressed shock after Germany's refusal to extend payments to all blockade runners
Germany's refusal to extend payments to all besiegers of Leningrad without discrimination is shocking. This was announced on January 27 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
"Germany's refusal to extend payments to all blockade survivors without discrimination on the basis of nationality is shocking against the background of the social benefits it has been paying for decades to former soldiers of the Third Reich," she told TASS.
The diplomat noted that, under far—fetched pretexts, the German side makes payments only to the blockade of one nationality, the blockade Jews. In her opinion, we are talking about a return to the criminal logic of segregation of people, which led the world to the Second World War.
On the same day, the Russian Embassy in Germany, on the occasion of the Day of the Complete Liberation of Leningrad from the Nazi blockade, announced that Berlin should officially recognize the siege of Leningrad and other crimes of the Nazi regime as genocide of the peoples of the USSR. The diplomatic mission also once again called on the German authorities to extend individual compensation payments to all besiegers, regardless of their nationality.
Tatiana Milyaeva, a history and social studies teacher, told Izvestia the day before that residents of besieged Leningrad did not immediately realize the severity of their situation. According to her, the desire of the besiegers to live and preserve human dignity prevailed over the feeling of hunger.
