New York City authorities decided to close all public schools on January 26 due to a snowstorm. This was reported on January 25 by the New York Post (NYP) newspaper with reference to the local government.

"New York schools will close on Monday due to a snowstorm. In connection with this innovation, about 500 thousand public school students in almost 1.1 thousand educational institutions of the city will study from home," the article says.

It is noted that dozens of schools in Washington were also suspended due to weather conditions. New York Mayor Zahran Mamdani also added that this measure was introduced for the safety of schoolchildren amid dangerous weather conditions.

According to the US National Weather Service, heavy snowfalls and dangerous ice are expected over a wide area from the eastern regions of Texas to North Carolina. A state of emergency has been declared in at least 21 states.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that the number of homes in the United States left without electricity amid a snowstorm exceeded 500 thousand. The total number of outages exceeded 523 thousand: the states of Tennessee (128 thousand), Texas (126 thousand), Mississippi (114 thousand) and Louisiana (85 thousand) accounted for the most.

ABC News reported at the same time that due to the impending snowstorm and extreme cold, at least 18 US states had declared a state of emergency. At the same time, the American authorities warned of heavy snowfalls and a sharp drop in temperature. US President Donald Trump said that emergency services have been put on high alert.
