In order to prevent the outbreak of the Nipah virus in India, Rospotrebnadzor recommended that tourists avoid contact with sick animals, follow personal hygiene rules, wash their hands regularly with soap or use antiseptics. This was reported on the agency's website on January 25.
"As part of the prevention, Rospotrebnadzor recommends that tourists traveling to these destinations: avoid contact with sick animals; wash their hands thoroughly with soap; use antiseptics; wash fruits and vegetables before eating; avoid drinking water from untested sources," the report says.
The ministry noted that the situation is under control. No cases of the Nipah virus-related disease have been identified in Russia. Rospotrebnadzor stressed that the country has a sufficient supply of test systems for timely laboratory diagnostics, and the Perimeter automated information system operates at checkpoints across the state border. It allows you to identify people with signs of infectious diseases in real time and prevent their spread.
The Nipah virus is a zoonotic infection and is transmitted to humans from animals, including bats and pigs. Infection is also possible through infected food and human-to-human contact. In recent years, outbreaks of the disease have been regularly recorded in India, and isolated cases have been reported in Southeast Asian countries.
If symptoms of the disease appear, including fever, cough or severe headache, citizens were advised to seek medical help immediately.
The Metro newspaper reported on January 24 that Indian health authorities are fighting an outbreak of the Nipah virus, which has "epidemic potential" and has no vaccine or treatment. According to the publication, five cases of the disease have been identified in the country.
