- In Germany, they offered to return the gold reserves stored in the United States due to Trump's policy
In Germany, they offered to return the country's gold reserves stored in the United States to their homeland. This was reported on January 23 by Der Spiegel magazine, citing politicians and experts.
"The time of growing global uncertainty and the unpredictable policies of US President Donald Trump makes it impossible to continue storing about 37% of German gold reserves, more than 1,230 tons, in the vaults of the Federal Reserve System in New York," said Marie-Agnes Strack—Zimmerman, head of the European Parliament's defense Committee.
According to her, such storage could have been justified during the Cold War, but now the geopolitical situation has changed. The politician demanded that the German government urgently provide a clear timetable for the full repatriation of gold.
Emanuel Mench, the former head of the Bundesbank's research department, also said that storing such a volume of gold in the United States now seems risky. Katarina Beck, a financial expert of the Greens in the Bundestag, added that gold reserves should not become a bargaining chip in geopolitical conflicts, and as long as Trump is in power, the safest option is to store them in Germany. The total value of German gold in the United States is estimated at €164 billion.
On December 17, Trump announced that Washington was imposing duties of 10%, with the possibility of increasing to 25%, on a number of European countries in connection with the situation around Greenland. It was noted that starting from February 1, 2026, tariffs will apply to Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Finland.
The head of the European People's Party (EPP), Manfred Weber, announced on January 18 that the European Parliament was suspending the ratification of the trade agreement between the European Union (EU) and the United States due to threats from the American leader. On January 21, the European Parliament officially decided to suspend the trade agreement between the EU and the United States.
On January 22, Trump said that the United States would respond to the European Union (EU) if it starts selling off American assets. He also refused to impose duties on goods from eight EU countries that objected to the American president in his claims to Greenland.
