Retired police Colonel Mikhail Smirnov, who confessed to the murder of journalist Maxim Maksimov in 2004, began military service under contract. His lawyer Seyran Harutyunyan announced this on January 22.

"A representative of the Ministry of Defense has filed a motion to suspend proceedings due to the fact that Mikhail Alexandrovich has signed a contract for military service," he said in an interview with TASS.
