Swiss tennis player Stan Wawrinka set a new record for the number of five-set matches at Grand Slam tournaments on January 22, having held 49 such meetings.

The record was set in the second round of the Australian Open, where Wawrinka defeated Frenchman Arthur Gea with a score of 4:6, 6:3, 3:6, 7:5, 7:6 (10:3). Previously, the record was held by Roger Federer, who played 48 five-set matches in his career.

In the third round of the tournament, Wawrinka will face American Taylor Fritz. At the same time, the 40-year-old athlete is the winner of three Grand Slam tournaments in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

On the eve of the Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev beat Frenchman Kentin Alice in the second round match of the Australian Open – 2026 with a score of 6:7 (9:11), 6:3, 6:4, 6:2. In the next round, the Russian athlete will face Hungarian tennis player Fabian Marojan.
