- Callas reported on the EU's unwillingness to "start a fight" with the United States over Greenland
The head of European diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, said that the European Union (EU) does not seek conflict with the United States, but intends to stick to its position on Greenland, having the necessary levers of pressure in its arsenal. She stated this on January 20 at the plenary session of the European Parliament.
"We are not interested in picking a fight, but we will stand our ground. Europe has a number of tools to protect its interests," Kallas stressed. Her words are quoted by the Reuters news agency.
In addition, the head of the European Diplomacy noted that the EU found itself in a crisis situation on the issue of Greenland, "which it had never faced before," and added that NATO was "quite suitable" to address the issue of Greenland's security.
On the same day, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that the United States was finalizing a trade agreement with the European Union (EU), but duties of 10% would still be imposed on a number of countries for sending military personnel to Greenland. The minister stressed that this measure will be introduced if Denmark does not voluntarily abandon Greenland.
US President Donald Trump said on January 20 that Denmark was not capable of defending Greenland. According to him, some Danish officials don't even visit the island. He added that the United States should get the island.
