Lavrov pointed to the lack of conditions for the Russian Federation's treaty with Greenland and Iceland.

Currently, there are no prerequisites for concluding mutual assistance agreements between Russia, Greenland and Iceland. This was announced on January 20 by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during a press conference on the results of Russian diplomacy in 2025.

"I don't see any conditions that would allow such a possibility to be assumed, and I don't think anyone in Nuuk or Reykjavik is thinking about this topic," the minister said.

Lavrov also recalled that Greenland is not a natural part of Denmark, but became part of the kingdom as a result of the colonial conquest. However, he clarified that the current status of the island and the attitude of local residents to the current state of affairs are a separate issue.

The Russian Foreign Minister also stated that there was no confirmation of the alleged plans of Russia or China to seize Greenland. According to him, such statements are not confirmed and are criticized even by Western experts.

In addition, on January 14, the American president reiterated that US relations with Denmark are "good," but Greenland is necessary for Washington to ensure national security. The head of the Government of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, stressed that he considers the "repeated rhetoric" of the United States towards the island to be disrespectful and unacceptable.

In turn, Vasily Koltashov, a political scientist and head of the Center for Political Economic Studies, on January 20 called Trump's plan to appropriate Greenland a payment from the European Union (EU) for deceiving the United States from Europe in the Ukrainian crisis.
