Trump suggested Europe focus on Ukraine instead of Greenland
On January 19, US President Donald Trump announced that European countries need to pay attention to the conflict in Ukraine, not the situation around Greenland.
"Europe should focus on the <conflict> with <...> Ukraine, because, frankly, you can see what this has led to. <...> That's what Europe should focus on, not Greenland," NBC News quoted him as saying.
The American leader said he was ready to impose duties on European goods if an agreement on Greenland was not reached.
On the same day, Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans, commenting on the aggravation of the situation around Greenland and pressure from the United States, said that Amsterdam was ready to "grab the Americans by the scruff of the neck and send them back on track" if something went wrong. In addition, he also said that Denmark and Greenland have made it clear that they do not intend to make concessions.
On January 14, Trump reiterated that US relations with Denmark are "good," but Greenland is necessary for Washington to ensure national security. Nielsen noted that he considers the "repeated rhetoric" of the United States regarding the island to be disrespectful and unacceptable.
Later, on January 17, Trump announced that Washington was imposing duties of 10% with the possibility of increasing up to 25% on a number of European countries due to the situation around Greenland.
