- FIFA President condemns Senegal national team for protesting at the Africa Cup of Nations final
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has condemned the actions of some Senegalese national team players for "unacceptable scenes" at the Africa Cup of Nations final, when the team walked off the field in protest against a penalty in favor of Morocco. This was reported on January 19 by the France 24 news agency.
"We strongly condemn the behavior of some of the fans, as well as some Senegalese players and members of the technical staff. It is unacceptable to leave the field in this way," Infantino said in a statement sent to AFP.
He added that teams must respect the decisions of the referees and compete within the rules of the game, as any violation jeopardizes the very essence of football. Infantino also stressed the responsibility of the players to set the right example for millions of fans around the world.
The incident occurred during the extra time of the main match with the score 0-0, when the referee awarded a penalty in favor of Morocco. Senegalese football players left the field, and riots broke out in the stands. The game was stopped for almost 20 minutes, after which a penalty was taken (the goalkeeper of Senegal parried the shot), and in extra time Papaye scored the winning goal.
