It is impossible to discuss the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine without a broader dialogue on European security. This was announced on January 16 by Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the President of Russia.

"As the President (of Russia Vladimir Putin) said yesterday. — Ed.), "peace will not be established by itself." In order for peace to be established, joint efforts are needed on opposite tracks," he said.

According to Peskov, it is for this reason that the problems of the Ukrainian settlement cannot be considered in isolation from the issues of ensuring security in Europe as a whole.

Politico reported on January 15 that European efforts to restore direct contacts with Russia had encountered resistance from Britain, reflecting a diplomatic rift among Western countries. Thus, London continues to insist that it is Kiev and the European states that must determine the conditions for ending the conflict.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on January 14 that Germany wants to achieve a balance with Russia as its largest European neighbor. As the Chancellor noted, he has always maintained that "Russia is a European country."
