In China, a newborn boy underwent finger transplant surgery after a midwife mistakenly injured him during a cesarean section. The incident occurred at a hospital in Xuyi County, Jiangsu Province. This was reported on January 15 by the South China Morning Post (SCMP) newspaper.

The incident occurred on the morning of December 25 at the People's Hospital of Xuyi County, located in the eastern part of China. During a cesarean section, a nurse accidentally partially cut off the middle finger of the newborn boy's left hand when she cut the umbilical cord.

According to the newspaper, about two hours after giving birth, the child's father found out from the doctors about the incident. After that, the baby was transported first to a clinic, and then to a large medical center in Wuxi, located about 300 km from the place of birth, where he underwent a finger transplant operation.

The midwife admitted the mistake and explained that the child's fingers had suddenly moved while she was performing the procedure. The Xuyi County Health Department said on January 5 that the cause of the incident was a "serious medical error" by the medical staff. The operation was successful, after which the child was transferred back to Shuyi Hospital for rehabilitation. The nurse was temporarily suspended from work.

The hospital administration apologized to the family and declared its readiness to fully assume responsibility for the further treatment and recovery of the child. The midwife's personal details were not disclosed. The baby's father said that his wife was grieving over the incident and could not come to terms with the situation. According to him, the child is in pain due to a metal needle inserted into his finger after surgery, and often cries.

Initially, the hospital offered the family compensation in the amount of 100,000 yuan (about $14,000), noting that in case of refusal, the dispute would be resolved in court. Later, the parties reached an agreement on compensation, but its terms were not disclosed. The case caused a wide public outcry in Chinese social networks. Users express outrage at the incident and doubts about the level of medical safety in maternity hospitals in the country.

On December 7, Science Daily magazine reported the death of a man with genetically modified pork liver in his body. It was clarified that after a successful operation, he lived peacefully for a month, and on the 38th day, doctors removed the graft after the development of thrombocytopenic microangiopathy. Subsequently, the man had several episodes of bleeding. The patient died on the 171st day after the operation.
