Olympic snowboard medalist killed in avalanche in Switzerland
Switzerland's first Olympic snowboard medalist, Ueli Kestenholz, was killed in an avalanche. This was announced on January 13 by the Swiss Ski Association (Swiss-Ski) on its website.
"Swiss-Ski and the snowboarding community mourn the passing of Ueli Kestenholz. Switzerland's first Olympic medalist in the snowboarding discipline, Ueli Koestenholz, died in an avalanche at the age of just 50," the organization said in a statement.
According to the federation, the incident occurred in the Lechental Valley. Kestenhol was the victim of an avalanche.
In 1998, 22-year-old Ueli Kestenholz won a bronze medal at the first Winter Olympic Games in history to include snowboarding. He also competed at the 2002 Olympics and was among the pioneers of Olympic snowboarding in Turin in 2006.
The day before, 21-year-old racer Rafael Cholet died in France during a motocross competition. The athlete crashed on landing after jumping, after which he collided with another motorcycle. The injuries were incompatible with life.
